First Christian Church's Rev. Dr. Stephen Sanders Ministers in Haiti
Immediately following the devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010, our President committed the United States to the task of helping rebuild the nation of Haiti. As a part of this effort, National Guardsmen, Army Reservists, active duty personnel, and civilians work on building schools and clinics, in addition to providing dental, medical, and veterinarian services. This year, the Task Force effort is called “Bon Voizen,” which in Creole means “Good Neighbor.”

First Christian Church's Senior Minister, Rev. Dr. Stephen A. Sanders has spent a total of 25 years serving, in one capacity or another, as a member of the U.S. Army and is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.  In May of this year, he served as Task Force Chaplain for Bon Voizen in Haiti, ministering to the religious needs of more than 700 members of the military who are serving there. Additionally, Rev. Sanders seeks to make a positive impact on the lives of the Haitians in the area.  Toward that goal, Rev. Sanders collected two huge trunks full of new or gently used shoes here at home to take to Haiti with him for the children in a Haitian orphanage.

Rev. Sanders said when they arrived at the orphanage, the children were expecting them, sitting in an open plaza between their buildings. Through the translator, Rev. Sanders explained that it was his privilege to be with them, and he told them that he and his colleagues wished to make a small presentation. As he knelt down and put shoes on little feet, he says he remembered the words that Jesus spoke, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it unto me.” (Matthew 25:40)

Rev. Sanders said, “I think it’s the closest I’ll ever come to kneeling before our Lord, and it happened in a hot and stifling orphanage in Haiti. We all went away with a sense of profound gratitude, not for what we had given, but rather what we had received!”

We are grateful to Rev. Sanders and all the members of Bon Voizen for their efforts in Haiti.  We pray for their safe return and for the people of the nation of Haiti.
